How is post office RD maturity calculated?
Every deposit earns interest from the month it goes in, and the interest is compounded every quarter:
Maturity = R × [(1 + i)n − 1] ÷ [1 − (1 + i)−1/3]
R = monthly deposit
i = yearly interest rate ÷ 4
n = number of quarters (20 for 5 years)
Worked through for ₹5,000 a month at 6.7%:
- i = 6.7% ÷ 4 = 1.675% a quarter
- That formula gives 71.3658 for every ₹1 deposited monthly
- ₹5,000 × 71.3658 = ₹3,56,829
- ₹3,56,829 − ₹3,00,000 deposited = ₹56,829 of interest
As a quick check, ₹100 a month becomes ₹7,137 after 5 years at 6.7%.
How much will your monthly deposit become after 5 years?
At 6.7%, ₹1,000 a month becomes ₹71,366 and ₹10,000 a month becomes ₹7,13,658.
| Monthly deposit | Total deposited | Interest earned | You get after 5 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹500 | ₹30,000 | ₹5,683 | ₹35,683 |
| ₹1,000 | ₹60,000 | ₹11,366 | ₹71,366 |
| ₹2,000 | ₹1,20,000 | ₹22,732 | ₹1,42,732 |
| ₹5,000 | ₹3,00,000 | ₹56,829 | ₹3,56,829 |
| ₹10,000 | ₹6,00,000 | ₹1,13,658 | ₹7,13,658 |
| ₹25,000 | ₹15,00,000 | ₹2,84,146 | ₹17,84,146 |
An older account pays less. ₹5,000 a month opened at 5.8% matures at ₹3,48,484, at 6.2% at ₹3,52,164, and at 6.5% at ₹3,54,954.
How much should you deposit to reach a goal?
Divide the goal by what ₹1 a month grows to. For ₹5 lakh in 5 years at 6.7%, you need about ₹7,006 a month.
| Goal in 5 years | Deposit every month |
|---|---|
| ₹1,00,000 | ₹1,401 |
| ₹5,00,000 | ₹7,006 |
| ₹10,00,000 | ₹14,012 |
What happens if you extend a post office RD to 10 years?
You can extend the account once, for 5 more years, and it keeps the rate it was opened at. ₹5,000 a month for 10 years at 6.7% becomes ₹8,54,273, on ₹6,00,000 of deposits.
Pick "10 years (extended)" in the calculator to see it year by year.
What are the rules of a post office RD?
- Term. 5 years, which is 60 monthly deposits.
- Amount. From ₹100 a month, in multiples of ₹10, with no upper limit. The amount stays the same every month.
- Who. A resident adult, up to three adults jointly, or a guardian for a minor.
- Due date. By the 15th of the month if you opened the account on or before the 15th. Otherwise by the last working day.
- Missed deposit. A default fee of ₹1 for every ₹100 of deposit, for each month missed.
- Loan. After 12 deposits and one year, you can borrow up to 50% of the balance.
- Early closure. Allowed after 3 years, but the deposit then earns only the post office savings account rate.
Check the current rules at your post office before you open an account.
Is post office RD interest taxable?
Yes. The interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. A post office RD gets no Section 80C deduction, on the deposits or on the interest.
So what you keep depends on your slab. At a 30% slab, the ₹56,829 of interest on the example leaves about ₹39,098 after tax and cess.
Post office RD or SIP: which should you pick?
Pick the RD when you need the money on a fixed date and can't afford a fall. The return is known on day one and backed by the government.
A SIP in an equity fund can earn more but isn't guaranteed. The same ₹5,000 a month for 5 years would grow to about ₹4,12,432 if it earned 12% a year, against ₹3,56,829 in the RD. Over 5 years, though, equity can also end below what you put in. See the SIP calculator for longer periods.
What does this post office RD calculator leave out?
It shows the maturity value before tax, with every deposit made on time. It doesn't count:
- Tax. The interest is taxed at your slab rate.
- Missed deposits. Default fees, and the interest lost on late money.
- Advance deposits. Paying 6 or 12 months ahead earns a small rebate.
- Bank RDs. Banks set their own rates and terms. Enter your bank's rate to get a close estimate.
