Is the Mahila Samman Savings Certificate still open?
No. MSSC was a one-time scheme that took deposits from April 2023 to 31 March 2025, and it was not extended. Post offices and banks no longer open new accounts.
Nothing changes for accounts already open. They keep earning 7.5% a year until they mature, 2 years after opening. The last ones mature in March 2027.
How is MSSC maturity calculated?
Interest is added to the deposit every quarter for 2 years, which is 8 quarters:
Maturity value = Deposit × (1 + 7.5% ÷ 4)8
Interest earned = Maturity value − Deposit
Worked through for ₹2,00,000:
- Rate for a quarter = 7.5% ÷ 4 = 1.875%
- ₹2,00,000 × 1.018758 = ₹2,32,044
- ₹2,32,044 − ₹2,00,000 = ₹32,044 of interest
How much will your MSSC deposit pay?
Every ₹1,000 deposited becomes ₹1,160 after 2 years. The ₹2,00,000 maximum becomes ₹2,32,044.
| Deposit | Balance after 1 year | Interest in 2 years | At maturity |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹50,000 | ₹53,857 | ₹8,011 | ₹58,011 |
| ₹1,00,000 | ₹1,07,714 | ₹16,022 | ₹1,16,022 |
| ₹1,50,000 | ₹1,61,570 | ₹24,033 | ₹1,74,033 |
| ₹2,00,000 | ₹2,15,427 | ₹32,044 | ₹2,32,044 |
Can you withdraw from MSSC before it matures?
Yes, once. After 1 year from the opening date you can take out up to 40% of the balance. On a ₹2,00,000 deposit, the balance after 1 year is ₹2,15,427, so up to ₹86,171 can be withdrawn.
- Closing early. After 6 months you can close the account without giving a reason, but the interest rate is cut by 2 percentage points.
- Hardship. On the holder's death, or serious illness of the holder or guardian, the account can be closed with full interest.
Check with your post office or bank before you withdraw.
