What is the KVP interest rate now?
The KVP interest rate is 7.5% a year, compounded yearly, for certificates bought from October to December 2026. At that rate a Kisan Vikas Patra doubles your money in 115 months, which is 9 years 7 months.
The Ministry of Finance reviews the rate every quarter. It has stayed at 7.5% since 1 April 2023. Whatever the terms are on the day you buy, your certificate keeps them until maturity.
What is the KVP interest rate history?
Since KVP was brought back in November 2014, the rate has moved between 6.9% and 8.7%, and the doubling period between 100 and 124 months. A lower rate means a longer wait.
| Bought from | To | Interest rate | Doubles in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 April 2023 | 31 December 2026 | 7.5% | 115 months |
| 1 January 2023 | 31 March 2023 | 7.2% | 120 months |
| 1 October 2022 | 31 December 2022 | 7% | 123 months |
| 1 April 2020 | 30 September 2022 | 6.9% | 124 months |
| 1 July 2019 | 31 March 2020 | 7.6% | 113 months |
| 1 October 2018 | 30 June 2019 | 7.7% | 112 months |
| 1 January 2018 | 30 September 2018 | 7.3% | 118 months |
| 1 July 2017 | 31 December 2017 | 7.5% | 115 months |
| 1 April 2017 | 30 June 2017 | 7.6% | 113 months |
| 1 October 2016 | 31 March 2017 | 7.7% | 112 months |
| 1 April 2016 | 30 September 2016 | 7.8% | 110 months |
| 18 November 2014 | 31 March 2016 | 8.7% | 100 months |
Rates are from the Ministry of Finance's quarterly notifications, listed by the National Savings Institute.
How is KVP maturity calculated?
The maturity value is always twice what you put in. What changes with the interest rate is how long that takes.
Maturity value = Amount × 2
Value after t years = Amount × (1 + Interest rate)t
Time to double = log 2 ÷ log (1 + Interest rate)
Worked through for ₹1,00,000 at 7.5%:
- After 1 year: ₹1,00,000 × 1.075 = ₹1,07,500
- After 5 years: ₹1,00,000 × 1.0755 = ₹1,43,563
- After 9 years 7 months: ₹2,00,000
An older certificate takes longer. One bought at 7.2% doubles in 10 years, and one bought at 6.9% takes 10 years 4 months.
How much will your money become in KVP?
Double, whatever the amount. At 7.5% that takes 9 years 7 months:
| You invest | You get after 9 years 7 months | In today's money |
|---|---|---|
| ₹10,000 | ₹20,000 | ₹11,442 |
| ₹50,000 | ₹1,00,000 | ₹57,212 |
| ₹1,00,000 | ₹2,00,000 | ₹1,14,424 |
| ₹5,00,000 | ₹10,00,000 | ₹5,72,118 |
| ₹10,00,000 | ₹20,00,000 | ₹11,44,236 |
Today's money assumes 6% inflation a year.
Does doubling your money beat inflation?
Only just. With prices rising 6% a year, the ₹2,00,000 you get after 9 years 7 months buys what ₹1,14,424 buys today. Your ₹1,00,000 has doubled on paper and grown by about 14% in what it can buy.
That's the trade with KVP: the result is guaranteed by the government, and it roughly keeps pace with prices. For goals 10 years away, compare it with equity in the lumpsum calculator.
How is KVP taxed?
KVP interest is taxed at your slab rate, and KVP gets no Section 80C deduction. What's left of ₹2,00,000 if the interest is taxed at maturity:
| Tax slab | Tax on interest | In hand after tax |
|---|---|---|
| 0% | ₹0 | ₹2,00,000 |
| 5% | ₹5,200 | ₹1,94,800 |
| 20% | ₹20,800 | ₹1,79,200 |
| 30% | ₹31,200 | ₹1,68,800 |
No TDS is deducted, so you declare the interest yourself. You can show it every year as it builds up, or all at once when the certificate matures. Check the current rules before you file.
KVP or NSC: which should you pick?
Pick NSC if you want the Section 80C deduction and a shorter lock-in. Pick KVP if you want to cash out early if needed, or simply want the amount to double.
| KVP | NSC | |
|---|---|---|
| Interest rate | 7.5% | 7.7% |
| Term | 9 years 7 months | 5 years |
| Section 80C | No | Yes, old regime |
| Early exit | After 30 months | Not allowed |
The NSC calculator works out the NSC side.
What are the rules of KVP?
- Term. 9 years 7 months for certificates bought now. It is fixed on the day you buy.
- Amount. From ₹1,000, in multiples of ₹100, with no upper limit.
- Where. Post offices and authorised banks.
- Who. A resident adult, up to three adults jointly, or a guardian for a minor.
- Early exit. After 30 months, at a value set by a fixed table. Earlier only on the holder's death or a court order.
- Loan and transfer. You can pledge the certificate for a loan, and transfer it to another person or post office.
Check the current rules at your post office before you buy.
What does this KVP calculator leave out?
It shows the value at maturity and at each year end by compound interest. It doesn't count:
- The early-exit table. If you cash out before maturity, the post office pays by its own table, which can be a little lower than the year-end values here.
- Yearly tax. If you declare interest every year, the tax is spread out, not paid at the end.
- Future rate changes. A new rate only affects certificates bought after it.
