What is a goal SIP?
A goal SIP starts from what you need and works back to the monthly SIP that gets you there. Instead of asking "what will ₹10,000 a month become?", you ask "what does my goal need each month?"
The catch is inflation. A goal that costs ₹1 Cr today will cost ₹3.21 Cr in 20 years at 6% inflation, and that's the number your SIP has to reach.
How is the SIP for a goal calculated?
Goal cost then = Goal cost today × (1 + inflation)years
SIP factor = [((1 + i)n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i)
Monthly SIP = (Goal cost then − Savings × (1 + r)years) ÷ SIP factor
i is the annual return divided by 12, n is the number of months, and r is the annual return. The SIP factor is what ₹1 a month grows to, with each SIP going in at the start of the month.
How much SIP do you need for ₹1 crore?
For ₹1 crore of today's buying power in 20 years, you need ₹32,099 a month at 12% and 6% inflation. For ₹1 crore on paper, ₹10,009 a month is enough; the SIP calculator shows that side.
| Time to goal | At 8% a year | At 10% a year | At 12% a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 years | ₹97,242 | ₹86,703 | ₹77,080 |
| 15 years | ₹68,799 | ₹57,345 | ₹47,497 |
| 20 years | ₹54,089 | ₹41,886 | ₹32,099 |
₹1 crore in today's money at 6% inflation. Monthly SIP at the start of each month, no step-up.
How much SIP do common goals need?
Short goals need safer investments and so a lower return assumption, which is why a car in 5 years can need a bigger SIP than a college fund in 15.
| Goal | Cost today | Years | Return | Cost then | Monthly SIP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Child's college | ₹25L | 15 | 12% | ₹59.91L | ₹11,875 |
| Home down payment | ₹20L | 7 | 10% | ₹30.07L | ₹24,659 |
| Car | ₹10L | 5 | 8% | ₹13.38L | ₹18,093 |
| Retirement corpus | ₹3 Cr | 25 | 12% | ₹12.88 Cr | ₹67,851 |
6% inflation, no step-up, no existing savings. Your own costs and returns will differ.
How does a step-up SIP lower the amount you start with?
A 10% yearly step-up halves the starting SIP for ₹1 crore in 20 years: ₹16,126 a month instead of ₹32,099. The SIP then rises with your income, and the final years carry more of the load.
It only works if you keep the step-up going. Skip a few raises and the goal slips.
How much more do you need if you start late?
Starting the same goal 5 years later doubles the SIP. With the goal date unchanged, ₹1 crore of today's money needs ₹63,561 a month over 15 years, against ₹32,099 over 20.
Existing savings help the same way time does. ₹5 lakh already invested for the goal brings the 20-year SIP down to ₹27,272 a month.
What if the SIP is more than you can afford?
You have four levers, and the calculator shows each one straight away:
- Move the date out. More years means more compounding and a smaller SIP.
- Add a step-up. Start smaller and grow the SIP with your salary.
- Count what you have. Money already invested for the goal cuts the SIP.
- Trim the goal. A smaller house or a closer college changes the number most.
Raising the return assumption to make the SIP fit isn't a lever. It only moves the shortfall to the end.
What does a goal SIP calculator not account for?
It assumes the same return every year and one inflation rate for the whole goal. Real life adds four things:
- A bad year near the goal date. Many investors move money into safer funds in the last few years so a crash can't hit the goal.
- Costs that rise faster. College fees and medical costs often outrun general inflation.
- Tax on withdrawal. Equity fund gains held over a year are taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh a year.
- Missed SIPs. A paused year near the start costs far more than one near the end.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the SIP needed for a goal?
Grow today's cost of the goal by inflation to the goal date, subtract what your current savings will grow to, then divide by what ₹1 a month of SIP grows to over the same period.
How much SIP do I need for ₹1 crore in 20 years?
₹32,099 a month at 12%, if you want ₹1 crore of today's buying power at 6% inflation. For ₹1 crore on paper, ₹10,009 a month.
What inflation rate should I use for a goal?
6% is a common planning figure for India. Use a higher rate for costs that rise faster than prices in general, such as college fees.
Does a step-up SIP reduce the amount I need?
It lowers the SIP you start with. A 10% yearly step-up cuts the starting SIP for ₹1 crore in 20 years from ₹32,099 to ₹16,126 a month.
Should I count money I've already saved?
Yes. Existing savings grow alongside your SIP. ₹5 lakh already invested brings the SIP for ₹1 crore in 20 years down to ₹27,272 a month.
What if the SIP needed is more than I can afford?
Move the goal date out, add a yearly step-up, count existing savings, or lower the target. Each one shows up in the calculator straight away.
