What is the EPF interest rate now?
The EPF interest rate is 8.25% a year for the financial year 2025-26. EPFO's board recommended it in March 2026 and the government approved it. It is the third year in a row at 8.25%.
The rate is set once a year, for the year that is ending. The rate for 2026-27 will be announced around February or March 2027. Until then, this calculator uses 8.25% for every future year; change it if you expect a different rate.
What is the EPF interest rate history?
The rate has stayed between 8.1% and 9.5% since 2010. The lowest was 8.1% in 2021-22, and the highest was 9.5% in 2010-11.

How much of your salary goes into EPF?
You pay 12% of basic pay plus DA, and your employer pays another 12%. But only part of the employer's 12% reaches your EPF. The rest goes to the pension scheme (EPS).
| Every month | Basic ₹20,000 | Basic ₹50,000 |
|---|---|---|
| You pay into EPF (12%) | ₹2,400 | ₹6,000 |
| Employer pays into EPS (8.33%, capped) | ₹1,666 | ₹2,083 |
| Employer pays into EPF (the rest) | ₹734 | ₹3,918 |
| Total into your EPF | ₹3,134 | ₹9,918 |
The EPS share is counted on pay up to ₹25,000 a month, so it tops out at ₹2,083. That ceiling was ₹15,000 until it was raised on 17 September 2026. Some employers pay their 12% only on the ceiling amount, not on your full basic. Check your payslip.
What changed in the EPF rules in 2026?
The wage ceiling went up from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month on 17 September 2026, the first rise since 2014. This calculator already uses the new ceiling. What it means for you:
- More people are covered. EPF is now compulsory if your basic pay plus DA is up to ₹25,000 a month.
- A bigger pension share. The employer's EPS part now tops out at ₹2,083 a month, up from ₹1,250. That leaves a little less of the employer's 12% for your EPF, and more for your pension.
- Above the ceiling it is optional. On pay above ₹25,000, you and your employer can choose to contribute on the full basic or only on the ceiling.
- Basic pay has a floor. Under the new wage definition, basic pay plus DA has to be at least half of your total pay, which raises PF for people with a low basic.
The scheme itself is now called the EPF Scheme, 2026. Your balance, UAN and past contributions carry over unchanged. Withdrawal rules were simplified at the same time; check the EPFO site for those.
How is EPF interest calculated?
Interest is worked out every month on your balance at the start of that month, at the yearly rate ÷ 12. It is added to your account once, at the end of the financial year.
Interest for a month = Opening balance × Yearly rate ÷ 12
Interest for the year = Sum of the 12 monthly amounts
So a contribution starts earning the month after it goes in. In the example, the first year starts with ₹2,00,000, adds ₹9,918 a month, and earns ₹21,000 of interest. The balance at the end of the year is ₹3,40,010.
How much EPF will you have at retirement?
Starting at 30 with no balance, 5% yearly raises and 8.25% interest, ₹50,000 of basic pay builds about ₹2.17 Cr by age 58.
| Monthly basic today | Put in by you and employer | EPF at 58 | In today's money |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹15,000 | ₹18.85L | ₹51.38L | ₹10.05L |
| ₹25,000 | ₹35.05L | ₹95.7L | ₹18.72L |
| ₹50,000 | ₹77.1L | ₹2.17 Cr | ₹42.49L |
| ₹1,00,000 | ₹1.61 Cr | ₹4.6 Cr | ₹90.02L |
Age 30 to 58, 5% yearly pay rise, 8.25% interest, 6% inflation, 12% contribution.
The last column matters. A crore 28 years from now buys far less than a crore today, so plan with the today's-money figure.
What happens if you contribute more through VPF?
Your EPF grows faster, at the same interest rate. In the example, raising your share from 12% to 20% of basic takes the EPF at 58 from ₹2.36 Cr to ₹3.17 Cr. Your employer's share doesn't change.
One limit to know: interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year is taxed at your slab rate.
Is EPF interest taxable?
Mostly not. EPF is tax-free at three points, with three exceptions:
- Your contribution. It counts under Section 80C in the old tax regime, up to ₹1.5 lakh a year.
- Interest. Tax-free on your contributions up to ₹2.5 lakh a year. Interest on the part above that is taxed.
- Withdrawal. Tax-free after 5 years of continuous service. Before that, it is taxed.
- Employer's contribution. Taxed if the employer's total to EPF, NPS and superannuation crosses ₹7.5 lakh in a year.
Check the current rules before you file, or ask a tax professional.
What does this EPF calculator leave out?
It assumes you stay employed and keep contributing until you retire. It doesn't count:
- EPS pension. The pension you get from the EPS share is separate and not shown.
- Rate changes. EPFO sets a new rate every year. One rate is used for all years here.
- Withdrawals and gaps. Advances, job breaks and periods without contribution.
- Employers who cap at the ceiling. If yours pays 12% only on ₹25,000, enter that as your basic for a closer figure.
- Tax. Tax on interest above the ₹2.5 lakh limit.
