What is Coast FIRE?
Coast FIRE is the point where you've invested enough that, with nothing more added, the money grows into your full retirement corpus by the time you retire. You haven't retired. You've finished saving for retirement.
From then on your income only has to cover your bills. That's the appeal: you can take a lower-paid job you like, work fewer hours, or spend what you used to invest.
What is the Coast FIRE formula?
Take the corpus you'll need on the day you retire, and divide it by how much money grows between now and then.
FIRE number at retirement = Yearly expenses × (1 + inflation)years ÷ Withdrawal rate
Coast FIRE number = FIRE number at retirement ÷ (1 + return ÷ 12)months
Worked through for a 30-year-old spending ₹50,000 a month, retiring at 60, with a 12% return, 6% inflation and a 4% withdrawal rate:
- ₹50,000 × 12 = ₹6,00,000 a year today
- After 30 years of 6% inflation, the same life costs ₹34.46L a year
- ₹34.46L ÷ 4% = ₹8.62 Cr, the FIRE number at 60
- At 12% a year, ₹1 invested today becomes ₹35.95 in 30 years
- ₹8.62 Cr ÷ 35.95 = ₹23,96,474
So ₹23.96L invested at 30 and left alone does the same job as decades of monthly investing. With ₹5L already in and ₹25,000 going in every month, you'd cross the line at age 41.
How much do I need to Coast FIRE at my age?
The later you start, the bigger the number, because the money has fewer years to grow. For ₹50,000 a month of expenses and retirement at 60, it's ₹17.65L at 25 and ₹59.96L at 45.
| Your age today | FIRE number at 60 | Coast FIRE number today |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | ₹11.53 Cr | ₹17.65L |
| 30 | ₹8.62 Cr | ₹23.96L |
| 35 | ₹6.44 Cr | ₹32.53L |
| 40 | ₹4.81 Cr | ₹44.17L |
| 45 | ₹3.59 Cr | ₹59.96L |
₹50,000 a month in today's rupees, 12% return, 6% inflation, 4% withdrawal rate.
How is Coast FIRE different from Barista, Lean and Fat FIRE?
Coast FIRE is about when you stop saving. The others are about when you stop working, and how well you live after that.
| Type | Do you still work? | What pays the bills |
|---|---|---|
| Coast | Yes, until retirement age | Your income. Investments are left alone |
| Barista | Part-time | Part-time income plus small withdrawals |
| Lean | No | Investments, for a basics-only life |
| Fat | No | Investments, with room for extras |
To find the age you can stop working altogether, use the FIRE calculator for India.
What do I still pay for after reaching Coast FIRE?
Everything except retirement saving. Your salary or business still has to cover rent or EMIs, food, school fees, insurance and holidays until the day you retire. Three things to keep going:
- Insurance. Health and term cover matter more once you stop adding to your investments.
- Other goals. A home, a car or a child's education are separate from retirement and need their own savings.
- An emergency fund. So a bad month never forces you to dip into the money that's meant to coast. The emergency fund calculator sizes it.
What are the risks of Coast FIRE?
The big one is a lower return than you assumed. The whole plan rests on 30 years of compounding, so a small change in the return moves the number a lot:
| Expected return | Coast FIRE number at 30 |
|---|---|
| 8% a year | ₹78.78L |
| 10% a year | ₹43.43L |
| 12% a year | ₹23.96L |
If you stop at ₹23.96L counting on 12% and earn 10%, you reach 60 with ₹4.75 Cr, about 55% of the ₹8.62 Cr you needed. Two more risks:
- Higher inflation. If prices rise faster than you assumed, the corpus you need at retirement is bigger.
- A break in income. Coasting only works while your income pays the bills. A long gap can force you to withdraw early.
The safe way to use the number: plan with 10%, check once a year, and keep a small SIP running even after you cross the line.
What does a Coast FIRE calculator not account for?
It assumes the same return and inflation every year and one steady level of spending. It leaves out:
- Tax. Gains are taxed when you sell, so the corpus buys a little less than it shows.
- Changes in spending. Expenses often fall when children grow up, and rise with health costs later.
- The order of returns. Markets don't deliver 12% every year. A weak decade early on leaves you behind the line.
Once you retire, the SWP calculator with inflation shows how long the corpus lasts with monthly withdrawals.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Coast FIRE number?
It's the amount you need invested today so that, with nothing more added, it grows into your full retirement corpus by the age you plan to retire. After that you only need to earn enough to pay your bills.
How is Coast FIRE calculated?
Coast FIRE number = FIRE number at retirement ÷ growth until retirement. For ₹50,000 a month of expenses, retiring at 60 from age 30 at 12% a year, that is ₹8.62 Cr ÷ 35.9 = ₹23.96L.
How much do I need to Coast FIRE at 30 in India?
About ₹23.96L for every ₹50,000 of monthly expenses, if you retire at 60, earn 12% a year, and inflation runs at 6%. At a 10% return the number is ₹43.43L.
Can I stop investing after reaching Coast FIRE?
For retirement, yes, if your returns hold up. You still need income to pay your living costs until you retire, and other goals like a home or children's education need their own savings.
What is the difference between Coast FIRE and Barista FIRE?
With Coast FIRE your job pays all your bills and your investments are left alone. With Barista FIRE you work part-time and withdraw a little from your investments to cover the rest.
What return should I assume for Coast FIRE?
Be careful here: the number is very sensitive to it. Indian equity funds have returned about 10 to 12% a year over long periods. Using 10% nearly doubles the number against 12%, and it's the safer plan.
