Advance tax due dates, FY 2026-27

    15 June: 15% · 15 September: 45% · 15 December: 75% · 15 March: 100%. Each is the share to have paid by then.

Income tax for the year is on all your income, with cess. Presumptive means you declare business or professional income at a fixed rate; you pay everything by the last date. Senior means aged 60 or above with no business income; you don't pay advance tax. Interest assumes what you've paid went in before the first due date.

    ₹1,50,000

Your advance tax for the year is ₹2,00,000: ₹2,50,000 of tax less ₹50,000 of TDS.

What are the advance tax due dates for FY 2026-27?

Advance tax is paid in four instalments: 15 June, 15 September, 15 December and 15 March. By each date you should have paid a set share of the year's advance tax.

Who has to pay advance tax?

You have to pay if your income tax for the year, after taking off TDS, is ₹10,000 or more. It applies to everyone: salaried people, freelancers, businesses and investors.

    • Salaried, with only salary. Your employer's TDS covers it, so nothing more is due.
    • Salaried, with other income. Interest, rent or capital gains can push the unpaid tax past ₹10,000.
    • Freelancers and business owners. TDS rarely covers the full tax, so you usually pay.
    • Presumptive taxation. You pay the whole amount in one go, by 15 March.
    • Senior citizens. Residents aged 60 or above with no business or professional income are exempt.

    How is advance tax calculated?

Estimate your tax for the full year, take off the TDS, and split what's left across the four dates:

Advance tax = Income tax for the year − TDS
To pay by a date = Advance tax × Share for that date − Already paid

Worked through for ₹2,50,000 of tax with ₹50,000 of TDS:

    1. ₹2,50,000 − ₹50,000 = ₹2,00,000 of advance tax
    2. By 15 June: 15% = ₹30,000
    3. By 15 September: 45% = ₹90,000, so ₹60,000 more
    4. By 15 December: 75% = ₹1,50,000, so ₹60,000 more
    5. By 15 March: 100% = ₹2,00,000, so ₹50,000 more

To estimate the tax itself, use the old vs new tax regime calculator. For gains on shares and funds, add the figure from the LTCG and STCG calculators.

What is the interest for paying advance tax late?

1% a month on the amount you fell short by. For the June, September and December instalments it is charged for 3 months each, and for March for 1 month.

Example: with ₹2,00,000 of advance tax and nothing paid by 1 October, the June shortfall is ₹30,000 and the September shortfall is ₹90,000. Interest on those two comes to ₹3,600.

    • A small cushion. No interest is charged for June if you paid at least 12%, or for September if you paid at least 36%.
    • After the year ends. If less than 90% of the tax is paid by 31 March, further interest of 1% a month runs from April until you pay.
    • Income you couldn't foresee. For capital gains and similar income, pay the tax in the remaining instalments and no interest applies to the earlier ones.

These are the interest rules long known as Sections 234B and 234C. The Income Tax Act, 2025 renumbers them from 1 April 2026. Check the current rules before you pay.

How do you pay advance tax?

    3. Pick the tax year 2026-27 and advance tax as the type of payment.

    5. Save the challan receipt. You'll need its details when you file your return.

What does this advance tax calculator leave out?

It splits a tax estimate you give it. It doesn't count:

    • Working out the tax. You enter your own estimate of the year's income tax.
    • The dates you actually paid. Interest is estimated as if everything paid so far went in before 15 June.
    • Interest after March. The extra interest for paying less than 90% by year end.
    • Changing estimates. If your income changes mid-year, re-run it with the new tax figure.

This is an estimate, not tax advice.

What are the advance tax due dates for FY 2026-27?

15 June 2026 (15% of the year's advance tax paid by then), 15 September 2026 (45% of the year's advance tax paid by then), 15 December 2026 (75% of the year's advance tax paid by then), 15 March 2027 (100% of the year's advance tax paid by then). The percentages are cumulative.

Who has to pay advance tax?

Anyone whose income tax for the year, after TDS, is ₹10,000 or more. That usually means freelancers, business owners, and salaried people with large interest, rent or capital gains. Senior citizens with no business income are exempt.

Do salaried employees need to pay advance tax?

Usually not, because the employer deducts TDS on the salary. You need to pay only if tax on your other income, such as interest, rent or capital gains, comes to ₹10,000 or more after TDS.

What happens if I miss an advance tax due date?

You pay interest of 1% a month on the shortfall, for 3 months for each of the first three instalments and 1 month for the last. More interest is charged if less than 90% is paid by 31 March.

How do I pay advance tax?

Online, through e-Pay Tax on the income tax e-filing portal. Choose the right tax year and advance tax as the type of payment, then pay by net banking, UPI or card.

How is advance tax paid on capital gains?

Capital gains can't be predicted, so you pay the tax on them in the instalments that fall after the gain. No interest is charged for the earlier instalments, as long as you pay in the remaining ones.
