Mutual fund overlap checker
Two funds can have different names and still own the same stocks. Overlap shows how much: for each holding both funds own, the smaller of its two weights, added up. 40% overlap means 40% of each fund's money sits in the same positions, so that part of the two investments rises and falls together.
Add two or more funds above to see the overlap of every pair. Each pair's own page lists the stocks they share, each fund's weight in them, and the largest stocks only one of them holds. Two funds of the same category often overlap 30% to 60%; two index funds that track the same index overlap close to 100%.
How to compare mutual funds
- Compare funds of the same category. A small cap fund and a large cap fund take different risks, so their returns are not comparable.
- Look at rolling returns, not one figure. A 3-year return depends on the day it is measured from. Rolling returns show every 3-year period and how often each fund beat its benchmark.
- Check the expense ratio. It comes out of the fund every day. Compare the same plan type, Direct with Direct.
- Weigh the ride, not only the return. Standard deviation shows how much a fund swings; the worst fall shows what an investor had to sit through.
- Check the overlap before holding both. Two funds that own the same stocks add little spread to a portfolio.
Frequently asked questions about comparing mutual funds
How do I compare two mutual funds?
Compare funds of the same category, over the same days. Look at returns over several periods and at rolling returns, not one figure; at the expense ratio; at risk (standard deviation and the worst fall); and at how much their portfolios overlap. Add the funds above to see all of it side by side.
What is mutual fund portfolio overlap?
The part of two funds' money that sits in the same holdings. For each security both funds own, take the smaller of its two weights, and add them up. 40% overlap means 40% of each fund is invested in the same positions.
How much overlap between two mutual funds is too much?
There is no fixed limit. Two funds of the same category often overlap 30% to 60%. The higher it is, the more the two move together, so holding both adds less spread. Two index funds tracking the same index overlap close to 100%.
Should I compare the Direct or the Regular plan?
Compare the same plan type for both funds. This page uses the Direct plan where a fund has one: it holds the same investments as the Regular plan but charges less, as no distributor commission is paid.
What are rolling returns, and why compare them?
Rolling returns are the return of every holding period of a given length, for example every 3-year period in a fund's history, not only the one that ends today. They show how often a fund did well or badly, so one lucky or unlucky start date cannot decide the comparison.
How many funds can I compare at once?
Up to 10 funds at a time on this page. Each pair also has its own page with the stocks they share and the full comparison.
Where does the data come from?
NAVs and expense ratios from AMFI, benchmark TRI values from NSE and BSE, and holdings from each fund house's monthly portfolio statement. Figures are updated every day. This page is information, not investment advice.
This page is information, not investment advice. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks; read all scheme related documents carefully. Past returns do not promise future returns. Figures come from AMFI, NSE, BSE and each fund house's own documents.
